Reflections of the whole module throughout the semester

So here marks the end of this module... really learned alot of things in designing. I never knew the existence of Adobe illustrator and the true usage of Adobe photoshop. Always hearing people using the term photoshop, I finally realized why people use this program so often. I can proudly say that I am able to use these programs. Haha When my friend saw me meddling with photoshop, it also sparked their interest in learning. So... I can be promoted as a trainee teacher!! to guide them how to use it. Basically, I realized that the best way of learning a new technology is to explore it yourself. The module was definitely hectic and time consuming but flipping across my portfolio and looking at my designs once again. I still ask the question "are the designs all done by me?". Always a failure in art but look at what I managed to come out with in this whole semester. WOW!

Typography & Visual Design: Final assignment: STORYBOOK PROJECT

Final design:

At last it was done. The problems we encountered was the printing color that came out was not as bright as what we see on the computer screen. What a waste... So anyway did I mention that our storybook got nominated in lecture? haha UNBELIEVABLE! there were like so many other good story books by the other students. haha

Sentiments:
I learned new tools again... from photoshop from my group mates.... and of course while doing this project I explored further into the coloring tools, erasing tools and airbrush tools. FUN! time just pass so fast when you doing stuffs on photoshop...

Typography & Visual Design: Final assignment: STORYBOOK PROJECT

At last... finally the last assignment came!! haha I had a great group... we were able to separate task efficiently and our ideas are more or less the same. All of us were willing to compromise... so we came out with sketches... Karen was the drawing artist, Jocelyn was the painter, I am the typist. And all of us brainstormed for the storyline... especially when we came to terms in making it rhyme. So here are the sketches:

Comments:
- Nice storyline =) ready for publishing.

Sentiments:
Was super glad that our story book worked out well... like this we can start revising certain things and start preparing for publishing. Learned the meaning of team work. Distribution of workload was definitely necessary to meet deadlines.

Principles of Visual Communication: Assignment 6b: individual assignment

The lecture we had for this assignment was a guest lecture. Honestly I cannot remember his name but his website is seriously not bad in terms of layout and design..haha and I remember his company's name card resembling a ticket, go take a look at:

The following are my assignments: just click on them!
Report
Power point Presentation of Website

Comments given:
-I got a really bad website to start with so my presentation was fine.

Sentiments:
Doing the report was tiring... I dont know why...haha maybe it was because of the typing and the blank white screen. However, the presentation was definitely more fun. I cropped the website pictures and outlined certain parts hoping to make the presentation better. Looking at the websites given to me so many times to ensure that I gave the right comments. Definitely this assignment made me know more about the application for the different visual principles.

Visual Principles (Part 3) visual perception: Assignment 6: Design Analysis

This assignment was the first group project. Syafiqah was my partner so we did out the points together. HAHA but she realized last minute that she had her bike practical... so I went to class alone thinking that the presentation would be done by myself. Then, the disaster strikes!! my blind eye did not see the word "powerpoint presentation" so we merely did out points and brought the magazine ad along. At the end, there was not enough time to present... so let me present it now with the powerslides I did up. View the link to see it k.

Power point presentation of good and bad posters

Sentiments:
It help me understood the different visual principles and apply it to a real design. Moreover, seeing other people's presentation... I think that putting the design on every slide helps audiences to connect the points mentioned with the design better.

Visual Principles (Part 3) visual perception: Classroom assignment: Gestalt principles

This lecture revolves around gestalt principles... learned it before in psychology 1101E...haha but could not remember the details...! I was amazed with the application of gestalt principles in designs... but there are so many principles..*Headache* So the following is the 3 images I sketched out to demonstrate gestalt principles... of cause I chose the 3 principles that I most understood...haha

1) Common region
2) Proximity3) Closure

Visual Principles (Part 2) Colour: Personalized your notebook: Assignment 5

So here is the next assignment... design a hp laptop skin and use good colors...haha I chose the themes love and nature. WHY?

Alright... we live in a garden city of Singapore... but still is urban... our only primary rainforest is like bukit timah hill... so why not design on nature... nature that symbolizes beauty, growth and nurture.

Love is definitely a personal emotion to my opinion. Can you imagine a world without love. The love I am referring to here is more of boy girl relationship. Being in a relationship for 6years. Love from him definitely supported me in times of sadness and loneliness.

Theme: Nature (thumbnail sketches)

The first thought that came into my mind for nature was flowers, sunshine, water and leaves. haha I personally like roses especially red ones. (symbolizes passionate you see. thats why!)

Theme: Love (thumbnail sketches)

The above sketch basically represents the attraction between 2 people. (the electric shock waves between their eyes) and them holding hands together. haha i think my sketch is quite kiddy.

Was kind of influenced by the first theme nature. So i decided to draw love as it is... from the "heart".

Prototype 1:
(Sketch 1)
So finally, I decided to incorporate the love designs into my nature theme. This is because I feel that for nature to flourish, love is definitely needed in nurturing them.

Product:

Presented this in class, I wanted to create a different feeling of the top cover being bright and the inner skin to represent that water was the reason to the successful growth of nature. Notice the glimpse of light on the rose? haha I was playing around with the illustrator and I thought what a cool effect it was and it could be used to symbolize life (a glimpse of hope). The water was done through adobe photoshop CS3 in the lab, suddenly felt like exploring adobe photoshop. Ok... I admit, I am kinda fickle minded when it comes to choose what program to use.

Comments given:
-looked like 2 different designs for different laptops.
-heart shape used too commonly. Therefore, it was better to use a simple rose.
-broken stem seems to represent breakage instead of positive associations.
-Grass did not look like grass.

Prototype 2:
(Sketch 1)
Sketched out another design for my inner laptop skin. A leaf that had water droplets on it.

Product:
Yup... so I improved my design according to the comments given in class. Used image effects to create the sunlight penetrating towards the rose. Changed the grass and added yellow butterflies to symbolize life. Added orange butterflies to connect the two skins together. I used complementary colors like "green and red", split complementary colors like "orange, blue and green".

Final Product:
I felt that using photoshop to do the rose was not smooth enough with the lines. Maybe I used the wrong techniques.. so oh well... I did the rose again using illustrator in the lab. Transferred it over to photoshop and replaced the rose... Now it is definitely so much nicer. =)

The designs I did for my skin basically has only one main focus. The rose or the leaf. I wanted to present nature as it simplest so the designs I did emphasizes on individual main elements. I adjusted the contrast and brightness for my final designs to make the colors more brighter.

Sentiments:
haha... I dont think my designs can be submitted to HP... No confidence! and viewing some designs by others... seriously...WOW!

Visual Elements & Principles (Part 1): Assignment 4: Save, prevent, kill…: Poster design

Subsequent attempts:

Prototype 1:

This attempt, I tried to lighten up the girl's clothes and brighten the color of the copy text to red. I changed the colorful font to just plain white. After looking at it longer, I still felt that the poster is heavier on the right (from the eye's view). The round girl was still funny...haha kind of unrealistic...

Prototype 2:

(Sketch 1)
Thought of another way to represent discrimination. Sketched the rough drawing to see if it works. Basically, I wanted to present a fat girl in a cage to represent her being discriminated whereas if you are slim, you would be free and even the butterflies like crowding around you.

(Sketch 2)

This sketch is my attempt to utilize the same idea. Noticed it?!! the Girl has been changed...haha Asked my friends and they definitely agreed that this girl looks much more real. Recalling what the lecturer said... we tend to hold on to our first idea and never let go. HAHA i think its so true... still holding on the first idea. And so...

This next attempt, I changed the GIRL! haha looks much better now... changed the bird too... I rearranged the alignment of the words to increase flow of reading. Moreover, I was trying ways on my photoshop version 7 to make the light more real... I did it!! *cLaP* through the use of clear emboss and adjusting the opacity.

Prototype 3:

Extended the wall to cover the bottom of the poster. This was aim to intensify the impact of societal pressures (wall symbolizing society) . Added flowers to symbolize the outside world which the fat girl was isolated from. She still holds on to the bird to symbolize her kind gentle nature and the yearn for her to get into the outside world with confidence.

Final Product:

Finally, I adjusted the light source...to increase the focus of the girl and make the poster more visually balanced out... hopefully I achieved that *CroSsEd FinGeRs*

Sentiments of this assignment:
Definitely made me discover more new tools on photoshop version 7... like the brush template to make the flowers, the use of layers, the light effects...etc and did i mention how amazed I was with the brush tool!!! all the shapes and the adjustments you can make with it... makes any design look much mroe professional!! haha

Visual Elements & Principles (Part 1) : Assignment 4: Save, prevent, kill…: Poster design

(Sketch 1)

Initial attempt:This is my initial attempt to do the poster. I did not use any photos because the easiest way to ensure your designs are fully original... drawing it would be the best way to my opinion. The concept of my poster lies with the notion of beauty. I was inspired by shows like "Ugly Betty" and dove campaigns. Moreover, i remember my last semester's sociology lecturer mentioned that " ugly is the new beauty" because the concept of beauty is forever changing. I did this poster with illustrator. I was still super noob about all the designing stuff. And again human figures!! as you can see.. the fat girl that i drew looks like some kinder garden work to my opinion! haha i tried to use only shapes of circles and ovals to form this figure. I was struggling with the wall... used the rectangle shape tool... tried to transform it to 3dimension. BUT the filling of colors could only fill to 2dimension!! At last.. I cannot remember how i changed it... meddling with all the tools and properties... finally managed to fill the wall with some texture effect.

Oh ya... i did this in the lab and forgot to bring my thumbdrive... =/ send it to my email as AI file... could only open as an adobe file... luckily i could still print out from the adobe reader and present it in class. Like what Singaporeans say... "HENG!!! AH!". LoL but of cause could not make further changes to it... *SoBz*

The comments given in class:
-Concept was nice.
-Fonts were too colorful.
-Poster was heavier on one side.

Credits to Mabel

The egg symbolizes amazing~ because a new life born is amazing!
The galaxy symbolises beautiful.

I initial colors were done by highlighters. I just added the colors by photoshop. Anyway, initially I draw a girl surrounded by shine. The comments given by our lecturer was that... change the girl. HAHA i think the girl was ugly too...cause it was drawn by me... I cant draw human figures for nuts! LoL
